Study of the "imparfait" tense in standard and Lebanese written French corpus, with didactic applications

L’expression de la temporalité en français est assurée par des marqueurs aspectuo-temporels, notamment les tiroirs. Dans le système verbal, plusieurs tiroirs de l’indicatif entrent en concurrence dans l’expression du passé, entre autres, l’imparfait. Notre étude de ce tiroir, codant les instructions suivantes : passé, inaccompli, non autonome est fondée sur le modèle de la Sémantique de la temporalité SDT (Gosselin, 1996). L’application du modèle sur un corpus de français standard (littéraire) a permis (1) une approche quantitative des effets de sens (typique, non typique et dérivés) ; (2) Une analyse approfondie de ces derniers montre que la détermination des valeurs comme imparfait itératif, narratif, de rupture, etc. présente des locus d’hésitation dépendant d’éléments co(n)textuels. En effet, ce tiroir ne peut être appréhendé qu’en interaction avec d’autres marqueurs aspectuo-temporels : le type du procès, les autres tiroirs utilisés, les circonstanciels, les relations référentielles entre propositions en dépendance syntaxique, etc.L’enseignement de ce tiroir dans un cadre institutionnel au Liban à des apprenants du niveau avancé inférieur constitue un des enjeux de ce travail de recherche qui propose une application du modèle de la SDT pour l’analyse de l’interlangue (français instable) des apprenants libanais. Après une explication des réussites et des erreurs dans l’emploi de ce tiroir, on propose une application didactique du modèle adaptée aux besoins et aux compétences des apprenants libanais.Mots clés : imparfait, temporalité, système verbal du français, effet de sens, didactique du français, erreurs, compétences, phénomènes d’interférence.The expression of temporality in French is ensured by temporal and aspectual markers, particularly by the tense. In the verbal system, several tenses participate in the expression of the past, especially the “imparfait”. Our study of this tense coding the following instructions: past, imperfective, not autonomous is based on the model of the Sémantique de la temporalité SDT (Gosselin, 1996).The application of the model on a written corpus of standard French allowed (1) a quantitative approach of the “effets de sens” (typical, non typical and derivative uses) (2) a detailed analysis of these uses shows that the resolve of the “repetitive”, “narrative”, “de rupture”, etc. values present some hesitations depending on textual elements. Indeed this tense only can be apprehended in interaction with other temporal and aspectual marks: type of process, other tenses usage, adverbial elements, referential relation between dependant propositions, etc.Teaching this tense in an institutional context in Lebanon to advanced level students (lower stage) constitutes one of the stakes of this research which offers an application of the model of SDT for the analysis of written language for the Lebanese learners (unstable French). After an explanation of the successes and the mistakes in the usages of this tense, a didactic application of the model is offered based on Lebanese students’ needs and skills.Keywords: imparfait, temporality, French verbal system, French didactic, errors, skills, interferenc
